East Coast Road is the scenic four lane stretch running from Tiruvanmayur in Chennai to Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry. Uthandi, originally developed as a weekend retreat for Chennai`s affluent, is a peaceful seaside settlement located along this road, best known for its sandy beaches and lush greenery. Over the past few years, owing to its proximity to a number of multinational corporation offices, Uthandi has become popular as a residential location for both Indians and expatriates who work close by. Now, several serviced apartments, houses, hospitals, entertainment centers, theatres and restaurants have opened in the area. Also in close proximity are the Taj Fisherman`s Cove, a luxury beachfront hotel, Cholamandal Artist`s Village, one of the first arts centres in the country, and a drive-in theatre. Other close-by attractions include Dakshinachitra, a living museum of South Indian architecture and customs, where traditional craftspeople and folk artists work and perform in reconstructed period settings, and Muttukadu, a backwater location with access to water sports and other seaside activities.
