This is a good quality antique 4ft 6” wide Victorian colonial Raj four-poster bed, which boasts the original polish, circa 1870 and originates from colonial India. This bed will fit a standard UK double mattress (4ft 6” wide by 6ft 3” long). The bed features a single tier structure with a single floral panel headboard, flanked by ring turned spindles to the arched headboard. Further above, sits an intricately carved British imperial floral crown. Alongside the outer perimeter frame of the bed, the headboard, footboard and side rails sit moulded side rails. To the bottom of the bed, the single tier footboard features turned spindles below a turned horizontal rail. The bed features traditional corner posts, which support four barley twist tapered posts containing carved floral rose to the base and a smaller floral head to the top of the posts. The posts in turn, support the protruding canopy. The legs of he bed terminate on turned baluster legs. Above the bed frame, the barley twist tapered posts support a protruding dovetailed canopy. There are also very pretty floral motifs sitting at the top of the posts.
This bed is in excellent condition, which is commensurate with its age. Some nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. This bed, which retains the original polish, boasts a rich dark red and brown colour and has a light gloss finish. The bed is solid in joint and ready to use.
